About Us

How to Survive Your Boss is a career strategy podcast built on real conversations between a big sister who's navigated boardrooms and a younger sister just entering the workforce. Together, we break down the unwritten rules of work β€” power dynamics, promotions, difficult managers, and the politics no one explains. Through honest dialogue and expert guests, we share practical, real-world advice to help you get ahead without losing yourself in the process.

The Hosts

Meet the Sisters

Kiana

Kiana

Producer & Host

Kiana is about a decade older and an up-and-coming leader in the AdTech and marketing space. She built her reputation working at start-ups, wearing every hat imaginable. That experience allowed her to rapidly advance her career, stepping into her first executive role by the age of 25. But that same early naivetΓ© and rapid growth also led to getting burned β€” and burnt out. Kiana represents the middle ground: no longer "green," with plenty of hard-won lessons to share, yet still in the early stages of a career with more to learn.

Tara

Tara

Co-Host

Tara is a freshman at Stephen F. Austin State University, majoring in biology with the dream of opening her own orthodontic practice for children with special needs. Unlike Kiana, she didn't grow up immersed in Japanese business traditions β€” her father passed away shortly after she was born. Tara represents our target audience: young adults at the start of their careers who "don't know anything" about corporate politics and navigating managers (of course).

Origin Story

Then it clicked.

Tara is a decade younger, starting college and stepping into the professional world. Kiana spent years inside agencies, startups, and boardrooms learning the unwritten rules the hard way.

Our calls became weekly debriefs and real-time adulting questions.

What are they going to ask me in an interview and can I wear comfy clothes?

How do I ask my boss for the week off with family in town?

At some point, we realized we were building a playbook and a platform.

So we hit record.

What began as private 1:1 advice between sisters evolved into How to Survive Your Boss β€” a show where we break down how work really works. No billionaire CEOs. No LinkedIn fluff. Just real-world strategy from people in it.

Because no one teaches you how to navigate power, politics, and promotion.

So we are.

Welcome to our database of advice from experienced, successful professionals on what it really takes to open and walk through the doors of professional life.
